Analysing Existing Book Covers | Award Winning Book Cover Designs

Ones I found on some lists of award winning book covers (2012 and 2014). Just gonna say what I like/what I think is good about them. I wont have read all these books so I'm just going off descriptions I find on sparknotes/wiki/goodreads.

  • Book about a woman with a past who wants to "dissapear".
  • set on a farm.
  • Cover gives hints about the books somewhat dark/threatening content without giving too much away.
  • Fractured cover, I think, mirrors mystery and pacing of the story. Plot is handed out in small amounts.
  • Font, squared off, goes well with squared off fractured bits of image on cover.
  • I like the contrast between geometric shapes and organic ones in the drawings of the animals/landscape.

  • "Involving story of how a passionate attachment to a great work of literature can shape our lives and help us to read our own histories."- Goodreads
  • I like how the images circle each other, creates a nice visual representation of these separate things in the characters life seem to circle around each other. Shows how all these aspects are involved with each other.

  •  I like the use of runes/odd shapes/looks almost like a map.
  • Text mixes well with runic? illustration with is mismatched parallel lines.

  • I like the use of paintlrly illustration contrasted with the quite neat text and paper.
  • I also like the 3D effect of the paper in the illustration.
  • I like the idea of this maybe continuing throughput the book (in my version anyway) with pullouts ect? Bits of Information.

  • This book has more images because I thought it was extra-special.
  • I really like the pullouts as I mentioned about the book above.
  • I like the extra design element of the outer book sleeve.
  • The book really gives a sense of atmosphere with it multiple layers and fold outs.
  • The design of the book itself tells a story.

  • I like the embossing and inlays.
  • Gold accents are really nice.
  • simple line-work and plain text but bold and very effective.

  • Clever use of overlays and photo-manipulation.
  • Heavily detailed but still pulls focus.
  • Simple, elegant text.

  • Nice combination of illustration and graphic design.
  • I like the juxtaposition of the two, very striking.
  • Monstrous hand creates sense of tension without revealing to much about plot.

  • Simple bold design.
  • I like how the type is integrated into the imagery.
