< initial sketch over skeleton
I started adding Polgara's character to the front of the book. I was working on this a while but I've decided that I dont like it.
I feel like the face is too shadowy. I know the way the scene is lit puts most of her face in the shadow, but with this image as it is, I feel like the back cover is going to be really visually interesting and the front cover is just going to be really dark.
I've also decided I don't really like the pose I first thought up. She looks kind of like she's creeping off somewhere, which wasn't really what I was going for. I was going for more of like a, a possible enemy has crossed their path and they are startled, kind of look. This is not that.
I'm probably going to redo this, three days before the deadline, yey.
(Another problem with this drawing is that I tried to draw directly onto the cover. The background totally distracts me and the area I'm drawing in is much smaller than I'm used to so my brush strokes are looking all janky.)
Might be easier to draw the characters together, on a larger document, then import them in and edit them so they sort of blend...
Another issue I've noticed, is because I'm so used to drawing people, and I've never before this really drawn a full environment piece, I was very experimental when drawing the background.
This is not bad, and I do really like the effect it's produced. It's just, because I have such a set way of drawing characters, the much smoother sort of, edges I use don't blend very well with the sketchy style of the background at all. I think I need to try a different approach with the characters.
