The McManus Gallery Visit

Midsummer Night's Dream, John Byrne, 1984.

First Impressions:

Really liked the line-work/line style. Variation in line thickness. I also really liked abstract/exaggerated shapes and the intricate typography.

Description:

Ink on paper. (2D)

Observations:

Image is, as far as I can tell, advertising an adaption of midsummer nights dream that was on at a theater the time this piece was drawn. Names of actors are dotted around the image. I do get a puppet-y sort of feel from the character which fits well with the sort of, theater aesthetic.

Critical view:

I really love the exaggerated art style and abstract shapes used in the character and on the text. As a poster though, I think the image isn't dramatic/noticeable enough. I think adding colour would have given it much more visual impact. And even if not colour, a wider range of tones would really have created a better focal point, made the poster stand out and catch a passers by's eye.

Reflective View:

I really like it. It takes me back to when I first started drawing and I only used ink/pencil on paper. For me, it has a very nostalgic quality. The mood is quite playful due to the exaggerated shapes, fonts and the clownish character on the image,

Influence:

The influence this piece will have on my work is that I now want to take more of an interest in typography. The text n this piece integrates really well into the image and I want the text on my book cover at the end of the project to integrate into my art as well.

Action response:

In response to this piece I am going to doodle some of my own ideas for fonts with integrated images.
